Review – Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance in Stainless Steel

Recently, I’ve had the good fortune to wear the Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance for a few weeks. This watch is one of the most revolutionary horological developments of recent years – or even decades – and seeing it in action on the wrist has been a sheer pleasure. The visual treat of wearing this timepiece on the wrist is so mesmerising that it can distract you from daily (boring) activities and even provoke daydreaming.

Hands-on – Bovet “Monsieur Bovet” – Wristwatch, Pocket Watch and Desk Clock in One

There is something special about the Bovet Monsieur… This subtly sophisticated watch is imbued with a sense of nostalgia for a bygone elegance. Its classical lines are clearly inspired by pocket watches. And it is no coincidence that this versatile watch incorporates Bovet’s patented Amadeo convertible case concept. Not one watch, but four watches at once. Here is our take on the new Bovet “Monsieur Bovet”

Buying Guide – 5 Mechanical Marvels from Baselworld 2018

On the contrary of most of the other buying guides we’ve published, the present one is more of a “wish list” or a “dream list” rather than a proper guide – or consider it a guide for those who already have everything they need and more. Nothing here is rational, it’s all about passion, ingenuity, creativity and impressive mechanics. From the thinnest automatic watch ever created to a signing automaton or an atomic sympathique clock, here the 5 most impressive mechanical creations we’ve seen at Baselworld 2018.

Hands-on – The new Green version of the MB&F HM7 Aquapod

When first launched in 2017, the MB&F HM7 Aquapod was quite a surprise… Imagine a jellyfish-inspired timepiece, with diving bezel, vertical movement with tourbillon, a decent water resistance and a design without a single angle, all in curves. Disruptive, provocative, unusual… A true talking piece. After the inaugural versions – red gold with black ceramic bezel and titanium with blue ceramic bezel – HM7 is back in a titanium case with a green sapphire crystal bezel, limited to 50 pieces (which makes a good occasion to look back at this very special watch).

Hands-on – Le Rhone Hedonia Grand Moon Phase

If there is no real practical use to it, the moon phase display makes for a fascinating spectacle and a poetic addition to a watch. If this traditional complication is usually tucked inside a small window, the Le Rhone Hedonia Grand Moon Phase instantly grabs your attention with a unique, oversized moon phase indication that takes up the entire dial. For reference purposes, the moon disc is 28 mm in diameter and the moon 9.9 mm. Not only does its size impress but also its execution, with a strikingly realistic moon representation.

Hands-on – De Bethune DB25 Starry Varius – Pimp your Constellation

De Bethune’s DB25 Starry Varius is a beautiful tribute to the firmament housed in a smaller, 42mm titanium case with an interesting customisation proposal.  Every watch is a unique, one-off model offering you the possibility of customising the night sky to your heart’s desire. After a somewhat unsettled period for the brand, Pierre Jacques is back as CEO, there is a new private equity investor on board, and master watchmaker and co-founder Denis Flageollet can exercise his creativity in the integrated manufacturing facility the brand has in L’Auberson. And if the DB27 Titan Hawk V2 and the DB25 Starry Varius are any indication of the shape of things to come, De Bethune is well on its way to writing the next successful chapter in its watchmaking saga.

Hands-on – Grönefeld Parallax Tourbillon with new Steel Hammered (Tremblage) Dials

What a difference a dial makes! When Grönefeld unveiled the Parallax Tourbillon in 2014, it was the third watch coming from the Horological Brothers, Bart and Tim Grönefeld. After the GTM-06 (Grönefeld Tourbillon Minute Repeater) and the One Hertz, they wanted to showcase a large tourbillon. One that would hover over the dial, or at least at the same level as the dial, so it would have all spotlights on the perpetual dance of a tourbillon. With the new tremblage dials, the emphasis still remains at the large tourbillon, while it also showcases the masterful art of hand-made tremblage.

Introducing – HYT H0 x Eau Rouge

The base concept of HYT Watches has always been around fluids. In fact, this fluid gives life to the watch and animates its functions, here the indication of the time. In this perspective, the HYT H0 (and the rest of the collection) are not that far from humans… This is why the brand’s latest creation, the HYT H0 x Eau Rouge, the colour red alludes to the very essence of life, the fluid that makes us alive: blood. Besides this, we also have new watches that looks superbly bold.

Independent watch brand H. Moser & Cie. had another strong showing at Baselworld this year, introducing several stunning new models. For the first time, 5N red gold makes its debut in the Venturer XL collection, creating a delightfully warm sense of contrast with the brand’s trademark fumé dials. Available in two different dial colours, this was definitely a sleeper hit from the brand for us.
