First Look – Zenith Defy Classic – Smaller, More Affordable, Still Bold

In 2017, Zenith relaunched the DEFY collection and impressed with the Defy El Primero 21, a hundredth-of-a-second chronograph with a 50Hz ultra-high-beat escapement dedicated only to the chrono. But that was not all. Later that year came the Defy LAB, with its revolutionary and unprecedented oscillator – a proper innovation. And finally, there was the new design, with integrated case and bracelet, large diameter and bold shapes. For Baselworld 2018, the design is kept but with more simplicity movement-wise – but not that simple either. Meet the Zenith Defy Classic.

Baselworld 2018 – Delma Shell Star Black Tag Limited Edition

Delma is a family-owned company whose origins go as far back as in 1924 when the Gilomen brothers founded their own company in Lengnau, near Biel. In the fifties and sixties, the diving needs, coupled with the growing popularity of Scuba diving, made the importance of robust and trustworthy underwater instruments paramount. This led to the development of the first dive watches. In 1969, Delma introduced the Periscope, its first timepiece with greater water-resistance. A few years later, in 1975, the brand issued its premier professional diver, the Shell Star. For Baselworld 2018, this watch makes a comeback.

Baselworld 2018 – TAG Heuer Unveils the Carbon Monaco, Made with Bamford Watch Department

Recently, TAG Heuer introduced the Monaco Gulf Edition, a watch that was looking back at the very roots of the model, creating the link with Steve McQueen and the “Le Mans” movie. Quite obviously a vintage take on the iconic square chronograph. Well, for Baselworld 2018, the brand has decided to bring avant-garde to this watch, by teaming up with Bamford Watch Department, which has created a bold, contemporary variant of the TAG Heuer Monaco, this time with carbon and aqua blue accents.

First Look – The Zenith Defy Zero G – Fighting Gravity in a Modern Way

Hot on the heels of last year’s Defy El Primero 21, a high-frequency chronograph capable of measuring hundredths of a second, and the Defy Lab, the most accurate watch on our planet with a pioneering oscillator, 2018 sees the launch of Zenith’s Defy Zero G. Equipped with its proprietary ‘Gravity Control’ module, the Defy Zero G fleshes out Zenith’s nascent Defy collection and stages a hypnotic, gravity-busting show on deck.

Baselworld 2018 – The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, now in Steel with 36mm or 40mm case sizes

While we’ve already presented you the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date in bronze with a 36mm case, this is not the only new version of this watch that Oris is introducing at Baselworld 2018. Baselworld 2018 – Maurice Lacroix Introduces Automatic (and accessible) versions of its Aikon

In 2016, Maurice Lacroix introduced a new collection named the Aikon. Based on a 1990s design, the Calypso, it was unfortunately (at least for us here, at MONOCHROME) only available with quartz movement. After the launch of a flagship version with skeleton movement earlier this year, it is time now for the brand to unveil the automatic versions of its sports watch. First Look – The Updated Rolex Deepsea Ref. 126660

In 2016, Rolex updated one its most iconic watches, the Explorer 1 39mm, by improving some small details that collectors’ complained about. Surprising indeed, but Rolex now does really listen to them and make sure that youthful errors are corrected. This year, for Baselworld 2018, the same happens with the giant Deepsea and the crown has done a few updates to keep the model on par with expectations. An alarm is often loud, obtrusive and annoying, simply to remind you to do something at a specific point in the day. There are watches, however, that exchange this loud, obtrusive annoying interruption into a mechanical wonder, just like this Oris Big Crown ProPilot Alarm Limited Edition, set to be introduced during Baselworld 2018.

Baselworld 2018 – Longines Legend Diver Black PVD and New Movement

For Baselworld 2018, Longines brings a few updates to one of its most iconic modern watches, the Legend Diver. Not only is now comes with a new and more performant movement, but mainly, it now available in full black – case, dial, strap. And while, here at MONOCHROME, we’re usually not huge fans of full black watches, this new Longines Legend Diver Black PVD has quite some appeal.

First Look – Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A

Patek continues to surprise us for this 2018 edition of Baselworld. After a rather unexpected perpetual calendar of the Nautilus, the brand now has a chronograph version of the Aquanaut – a first since the introduction of the model in 1997. And there’s more as the Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A comes with quite some colors on the dial and the strap too. Like or not, but Patek is moving forward.
