Our picks of the best Hublot watches of 2020, including some Black Magic, beautiful bracelets and modish millennials

best Hublot watches of 2020Over the last few years we’ve seen lots of brands turn to their archives as inspiration for new watches. Heritage is very, very popular. But what if you don’t have a century or more of archives to dig through in search of exciting designs? What if your brand was only founded in 1980? For Hublot, celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, that hasn’t been a problem. Perhaps thanks to having such a legendary innovator as Jean-Claude Biver at the helm for so many years has seen that philosophy ingrained into the very fibre of the brand. Innovation has been at the core of what Hublot has done for a long time. From their R&D sharing partnerships with brands like Ferrari, to their pioneering approach to new watchmaking materials, Hublot hasn’t looked back because they’ve been too busy moving forwards.  In the year of their 40th anniversary, Hublot hasn’t wavered, releasing a number of novelties that explore new concepts, materials and movements. With that in mind, these are a few of the best Hublot watches of 2020 that offer a capsule insight into what the brand is capable of four decades into their journey. The Big Bang Unico Sky Blue is part of a one-two colour punch that is peak Hublot

Hublot Big Bang Unico Sky BlueThe ubiquity of blue this year has not gone unnoticed, with almost every brand hopping onto the trend in the hope of convincing more consumers to buy their watches. Hublot’s direction in the colour chosen for the Hublot Big Bang Unico Sky Blue is not a case of trend-following. It’s yet more proof of the brand reading the room – where suddenly bright colours are more popular than ever, thanks to the gloomy global 2020 mood – and turning the freshness factor up to 11. Instead of just another blue dial, Hublot brings an entirely new shade of the colour to the market – going so far as to incorporate it into the case as well as the dial. Through their use of innovative materials, the brand has brought us a Sky Blue take on their Unico watch that evokes a city of gears floating in the sky and clouds above. The watch is 42mm of robust ceramic and features a self-winding flyback column wheel chronograph movement manufactured in-house. It may seem like a party on the outside, with its youthful sky blue exterior, but make no mistake — it means business inside, providing one of the most unique and…

The Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink in this video sure is pretty, but is it pink, per se?

Hublot Big Bang Millennial PinkEditor’s note: In case you’re wondering, yes! This is the ‘pink’ watch we’ve been hanging to see in the metal, if not just to contrast the real-life shade with the renderings in the press release. And, do we still call it pink? Well, Thor does, as you’ll see from the opening par. But I don’t. This is light beige. Nude. Flesh. Champagne. If it is indeed pink, it’s the palest, duskiest pink I’ve ever seen. It’s no less compelling for the tonal shift, in fact it becomes even more unusual. I don’t know about you, but there’s something about this shade that makes it hard to look away. Read on, but better still, check out the video.  Okay, I’m saying it. I. WANT. A. PINK. WATCH. I’m not sure what that says about me, but the skin-toned pink on the Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink is so delicious that I’m close to using expletives. Describe it to someone and be warned: you will not have the same reaction, like me when I read the brief. Yet, you will see it quite clearly in this video, this idiosyncratic blend — of the toughness with the candy fluff pink of children’s teddy bears…

We’re calling it: these are the best two vintage Carrera re-issues since the real thing. But which one is your favourite? And are you going to pull the trigger?

TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years AnniversaryWe’ve all likely seen these two glorious new Carrera references by now, but there are two hot questions remaining. Do you like either or both enough to pull the trigger? Because we have it on good authority that they’re just about done. You can pick them both up here until they’re gone. The second question is, which, in the end, is your favourite? TAG Heuer celebrate their 160th anniversary with two limited edition chronographs that each celebrate the essence of the brand in their own way. The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition and the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition. The Carrera chronograph line has been a staple of the racing chronograph category, with drivers and automotive enthusiasts everywhere touting them on their wrists. These stainless steel chronographs present fans of the brand with two great options to choose from. Some may even opt to add both to their collections, with each being such solid entries into the collection that many will wish the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Anniversary models were standard production. They are both housed in 39mm cases, a nice compromise between modern and classic sizing, with sharp angular lugs that taper…

VIDEO: The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph collection, a sharp new formula for a classic

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph collectionIn a year that sees TAG Heuer peaking with vintage inspiration, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph collection comes sliding into our feeds as a fresh take on a classic. There is strong inspiration from its ’60s heyday, while a contemporary 42mm case, and a sparkling new engine inside in the Heuer-02 movement, inspires a timeless quality worthy of the strong Carrera heritage, with no need for fauxtina. In these four strong references, we have a distillation of the design codes of the Carrera, which is to many the epitome of a 1960s chronograph. There is an elegant, urban touch that contemporarizes the classic design, and underlines how colours, dial details and strap choices transforms it from bold monochrome racer to the formality of a boardroom, without losing its strong identity. The tension in the case, underlined by the polished bezel and slim, angled lugs, creates an emphasis of balance between sports and elegance. The monochromatic black dial version has the purest vintage inspiration here, while the angular brushed steel bracelet sweetens the deal for a bold wrist presence. The sunray finish of the blue dial version is an exquisite bright navy, with an enigmatic hard-to-capture on camera quality. The…

VIDEO: The new TAG Heuer Carrera Collection blue dial is a contemporary take on the classic racing watch

TAG Heuer Carrera Collection blue dialIf, like me, you love the svelte lines and sharp details of the vintage Heuer Carrera, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Collection blue dial chronograph (available for purchase here) is a reliable, sleek modern rendition. This is faithful to the lineage, in a contemporary 42mm. The deep blue dial blends formality with the clear motorsports lineage of the range, and is yet another strong contender from La Chaux-de-Fonds. There is no doubt that you are wearing a Carrera, yet this shows just how much a new rich colour brings to the resilient DNA. A sleek, suit-ready take on one of the most important chronographs of the last 50 years is no mean feat. The recognisable case is well proportioned, rendered in a vintage-inspired aesthetic, with a dynamic between dial, bezel and case body. The dial emanates a sporty vibe, and should you catch the right angle, you’ll have it winking at you with a delicious hint of purple. The delicate blue sunray scene is complete with sharp polished indices, register pointers and those classic baton hands. Under the caseback sits the Heuer 02 caliber, with its proven track record and weekend-safe 80-hour power reserve, yet another reason why this take…
