As 2017 is coming to an end, and before the new horological season starts with the SIHH (as of January 15th, 2018), we thought it was important for you to understand what happened this year in the watchmaking industry. The idea here isn’t to focus on watches, we’ll have another recap article for that. In all fairness, 2017 has been an eventful year. From the game of musical chairs at Richemont to the comeback of growth, let’s make a throwback to the highlights of the watchmaking industry in 2017.
Reviewing watches isn’t everything we do, but it’s certainly the heart of it. And this year we’ve photographed, videoed and generally dissected some of the best. So, in the tradition of end-of-year wrap-ups we thought it an excellent idea to run through our top 10 watch reviews of 2017, according to the cold hard stats of our analytics engine. Today we’re going through numbers 10 to five, kicking off with Bulgari’s slender superstar … 10: HANDS-ON: Barely there brilliance – the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic Some watches have a serious honeymoon period, starting with that first blush of excitement at Basel and gradually softening as the year goes on. For Bulgari though the honeymoon isn’t over as the Octo Finissimo is as fresh today as it was on the first day we saw it. 9: HANDS-ON: Grand Seiko has just released their first professional diver, the Hi-Beat 36000 Professional 600m (refs. A few perfect examples of less truly being more.
With the year coming to a close, you had to know this was coming…
A great looking simple dress watch has a certain “je ne sais quoi”. Of course there’s is only so much you can do as a designer, at least that what most laymen think. And also to us there are some very simple 2, or 3-hand watches that are just… perfect. The size, the shape of the case, that small bevel on the lugs, and that lovely straight-brushed case-band, or any other detail that can just hit the right note. But how difficult is it to find that perfect balance when designing something. We set out and asked the experts, Anthony de Haas, A. Lange & Söhne’s director product development, and Bruno Moinard, an acclaimed architect and designer. What is timelessness, and how to translate this, in all subtleness, into a design that will remain appealing for decades, or even centuries. Here’s what they told us about this ‘elusive’ property.
As the year ends, the time has come to reflect, and reflect I shall. We published A LOT of content this year, and I’ve been tasked with the serious challenge of picking my top five. Well, here they are. HOW TO: Hide your watch obsession, 9 handy hints First up is a piece I wrote personally, simply because I enjoyed writing it so much. The response to this article was overwhelmingly hilarious, and not only were these handy hints practical – for a lot of watch collectors, they were a little too real. The best part was that the list was based on my personal experience, and those around me. OPINION: Buying a new watch? Don’t even think about investment value For me, the title says it all – Sandra absolutely nailed the brief. One of the top questions I get asked is, ‘Which watch will be a better investment, X or Y?’ – and it drives me crazy. Unless we’re talking rare vintage watches, the answer is almost always, ‘If you’re buying a watch for investment purposes – don’t.’ Now I can just send this link. HANDS-ON: Seiko show their dark side with the Prospex SSC673P and SNE493P Oh…
