Glashütte Original is not necessarily known for its super-complicated watches, although there are certainly a few notable ones in the collection, such as the Senator Cosmopolite and the PanoLunar Tourbillon. What the German watch-manufacturer is known for, however, is making high-quality, elegantly designed timepieces that meld tradition with modern techniques. The latest example of this comes in the form of the newly announced, Senator Tourbillon – Edition Alfred Helwig. Read on for all the details.

Just in time for the holidays, we bring you seven great watches – for men and women – under USD1,000, as selected by women insiders in the watch industry. This article was initially conceived of in response to the male-insiders-only article written in the New York Times just over a week ago. For that article, entitled “A Watch With Snob Appeal for Under $1,000? Six Watch Insiders Offer Picks” the author opted to inquire about top watches under $1,000 as selected by 6 different men, including our Founder, Frank Geelen. We, at MONOCHROME, wanted to hear what women have to say on that topic too. Additionally, we can bring some choices for both men and women as well – something the men really can’t do.
“Art is subjective” – a phrase I’m sure you’ve heard, and even said once or twice. Usually in response to someone who has made some rather critical comments about a particular artist or piece of work you like. Whether it’s a painting, a song, a photograph, or a sculpture. There’s always going to be two camps – those who love it, and those who don’t. And like art, Hublot’s bold and sometimes brash designs often divide opinion. But that hasn’t stopped them from pushing the envelope, and developing some incredibly innovative designs. Because you see, Hublot loves art. It’s part of their DNA. And over the years they’ve collaborated with countless artists. From tattoo artist Maxime Büchi to street artist Tristan Eaton. And this year, bestselling French contemporary artist Richard Orlinski. Centred on his “Born Wild” concept, Orlinski’s work is brought to life by brightly coloured sculptures cut with multiple diamond-like facets. His Pop Art-style beasts – seen all around the world – ranging from his “Wild Kong” gorilla sculpture on the Croisette in Cannes to a 5-metre tall bear on the snowy slopes of Courchevel. Now bringing his radical approach to watches, Richard Orlinski has designed a completely new…

Editor’s note: Matt Hranek’s now sold-out book, A Man and His Watch, is one of the real standouts of the watch year, a beautiful and thoughtful text, packed with 76 stories of watches and the people who wear them. So taken were we by this book, we asked Matt if it would be possible to republish a few of his interviews. He kindly said yes. FRANK CASTRONOVO Chef & co-owner, Frankies Spuntino Group IWC Mark XV My grandfather was an amazing guy, a working-class kid made good. He grew up in Brooklyn during the Depression. It was a tough life. He hustled, dropped out of high school, and enlisted in the army. He fought in the war, got a lot of commendations, and came out a lieutenant. He stayed in the reserves and rose all the way up to colonel. A natural leader. And he was a collector — cars, watches, guns from the Civil and Revolutionary wars. He believed that those things stayed with you. They retained value; they were collectibles. My daughter was born in 2000 while I was living in Germany, and my grandfather came to see us. The trip was twofold: he wanted to visit our family,…

Each vintage watch has a story; but more often than not, the story gets lost along the way. At HODINKEE, we love a good story because that is what we live for. In a rare opportunity, we discovered a Heuer “Rindt,” Ref. 2446, with a tale to be told which involves Jack Heuer in the late 1960s.
