We continue with Only Watch 2017 and the incredible prices that this charity auction is bringing. After the unique Patek Philippe 5208T sold for close to CHF 7.3 Million, what was under the hammer next was the unique F.P.Journe Chronographe Monopoussoir Rattrapante, a watch created especially for the occasion of the auction – and not only unique in its style, but featuring a movement created only for this watch, the first Ever Split-Seconds Chronograph done by Journe, and most probably the only one, as the watchmaker said that it will remain unique. This watch just achieved an impressive CHF 1,150,000, making it the most expensive F.P.Journe ever auctioned… and by far.

EDITOR’S PICK: What it’s like to spend 2 years with a Rolex Datejust

Editor’s Note: This review of the classic Rolex Datejust is a little different to the usual. While we generally spend a couple of days with a watch, Bruce Duguay has been wearing his Datejust for a couple of years. Bruce shares the sort of insights that only come over time. It’s a great companion piece to one of our most popular reviews, Bruce’s excellent review of the Rolex GMT-Master II BLNR. VIDEO: Girard-Perregaux level up with the Laureato in steel

A little while ago, we put together a list of luxury sports watches and it went – to use a technical term – bananas. There’s something about the combination of utility and exclusivity that really appeals to people. And as I look down at the Laureato on my wrist as I type this, I can honestly say, I get it. Sure, tool-like dive watches and sporty chronographs fill a place in our watch-loving hearts that crave functionality and purpose, but a watch like the Laureato offers something more. Purpose and practicality, with ample lashings of beauty. I mean, just look at how that Clous de Paris dial, or those bracelet links, blaze in the light. This watch looks good in pictures, but it comes alive on the wrist. Girard-Perregaux Laureato 42mm Australian Pricing Girard-Perregaux Laureato 42mm, in steel on bracelet, $16,080

Watches and Formula 1 – Episode 7 – Williams F1 and Oris

40 years, for some this feels like an eternity (I am only 33 years old) and for others it feels like next to nothing. Making it 40 years in life doesn’t require too much effort if you have no serious challenges. But to make it 40 years in the grueling sport of Formula 1 takes skill, determination, luck, good judgment, a lot of money and a clear vision. One of the most illustrious names in the business is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, so it is only fitting to include it into our Watches & Formula 1 saga; Williams F1 and their long-term watch partner, Oris.
