Baselworld 2017 – Recreating The First Grand Seiko (SBGW251 – SBGW252 – SBGW253) Plus A Modern Reissue (SBGR305)

Seiko, for a long time, has been away from the trend of vintage and reissues. This was simply not their thing, the brand simply emphasized on evolution and modern designs. Yet, since a few years now, and mainly with the arrival of the Presage collection, the Japanese brand now looks at its rich history. For Baselworld 2017, the focus will be on the recreation of the first Grand Seiko, launched for Japan only in 1960 (while the international launch of Grand Seiko took place in 2010), with three limited editions (SBGW251 – SBGW252 – SBGW253). And for those who prefer present days, there will also be a modern reissue, the SBGR305.

Introducing: The Rolex Sky-Dweller Ref. 326934 In Stainless Steel And Ref. 326933 In Two-Tone (Live Pics & Pricing)

You asked and you shall receive! On the first day of Baselworld, Arthur and I talked through some of the new watches from Rolex, but we didn’t get to the new pair of Sky-Dwellers, references 326934 and 326933. The Sky-Dweller is big, bold, and certainly a little polarizing. Now we’ve got a stainless steel version and a two-tone steel and yellow gold version, making this watch more approachable than ever.

Baselworld 2017 – The New Bell & Ross Vintage Collection, Smaller, Slimmer, More Elegant

Since now over a decade, Bell & Ross have had in their collection “another” watch, rather different at first from the sporty or military-oriented pieces, such as the iconic square BR01. This watch is the Vintage, a watch made to be more classic, more elegant and cleverly using 1960s elements. Don’t think that it is not 100% Bell & Ross though, as it has taken its inspiration from the history of aviation. For Baselworld 2017, the Bell & Ross Vintage Collection is slightly revamped and now comes in a smaller, slimmer and more elegant design.

Introducing: The Rolex Datejust 41, Now In Stainless Steel With The Reference 126334

The most important release from Rolex this year might not even be on your radar yet. True, the larger Sea-Dweller quickly grabbed the headlines, but the announcement of a new Datejust 41 deserves at least as much attention. It is not a new watch per se, as the Datejust 41 was formally introduced last year, but it is the very first time that the case comes in stainless steel, which guarantees a more friendly price tag.

Introducing: The Longines Record, The First All COSC-Certified Collection From Longines

You have probably seen (and if you are like me, drooled over) the new Longines Heritage 1945. However, Longines has released a number of attractive, cool, and relatively affordable timepieces this year at Baselworld. In addition to the 1945 and the Heritage Flagship there is the Record Collection – a simple selection of steel watches available in four sizes with a variety of dials. The most impressive thing about this collection is that it is the first Longines collection that is entirely COSC-certified.

NEWS: This beaten-up Tudor Oyster Submariner 7923 is about to sell for more than $100,000 on eBay

Buying vintage watches on Ebay can be a risky business. There’s a lot of sharks and gussied up pieces in those murky waters. But, every so often those incredible barn finds do happen. Like this reference 7923 Tudor Submariner, which at the time of writing has a high bid of $99,999 USD, with 2d 16h to go. Yes you read that number right, a buck below one hundred grand. And to think that the seller originally listed it with a starting price of $3500, and the following sparse (almost poetic) description; The model number is 7923. This is one of the few manual winding  watches. There is no band. The watch does NOT function. There is a ding in the crystal @ 5:27 with scratches front and back. It seems that on March 20th the San Francisco seller realised what they had on their hands, possibly due to the presumed deluge of interest in Tudor’s first ever dive watch, as they updated the description to let us know the watch was now in a safe deposit box and to provide geiger counter readings and other information expected of a watch of this rarity. Of course we can’t know for sure if…

First Take: Jack And Louis Discuss The New Seiko Releases At Baselworld 2017 (VIDEO)

One of the biggest pieces of news at Baselworld this year was from Seiko. Since the introduction of Grand Seiko to the international market in 2010, what was once a bit of a watch insiders’ secret has become a major global success story. For that reason, this was the year that Seiko announced that moving forward, Grand Seiko would be an independent brand. HODINKEE’s own Jack Forster and Louis Westphalen got in front of the camera today to give us their thoughts on Grand Seiko past, present, and future, and to give us some insights on some of the new vintage-inspired Seiko divers as well.
