Hand-Drawn Steampunk Crustacean Powered by Gears

Titled Mechanical/Biological [Crustacean Study], the series of drawings by French artist Steeven Salvat by are inspired by 19th century biological illustrations, and created in much the same manner. The series comprises nine illustrations, each depicting various species of crabs and lobsters. Each crustacean is depicted from a bird’s eye view, with one half shown with the shell […]

EXCLUSIVE: Hands-on with the Oris Royal Flying Doctor Service Limited Edition II, live from the Avalon airshow

When it comes to partnerships, there are a few routes watch brands typically embark on. There’s the celebrity ambassador, which is often little more than name awareness and a few key appearances. Then there’s the high-profile event tie-in, which usually results in a limited edition with a few dial tweaks. And there’s the organisational partnership, which, in its best form results in two like-minded parties creating something that benefits all involved. It’s this last model that Oris tends to opt for, and they do it well. Oris Australia has a strong track record in supporting charitable organisations, notably their work around the Great Barrier Reef, but also their partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service – a comprehensive air ambulance service that provides primary healthcare to people living in rural and remote communities, across a swathe of Australia encompassing 7.13 million square kilometres. It’s essential work that the RFDS has been undertaking since 1928, which Oris has been actively involved in since 2013, releasing the first generation of the Royal Flying Doctor Service watch, as well as providing ongoing support. Today Oris and the RFDS unveil the second generation of the RFDS watch, in the perfect setting of the Avalon Airshow. And it…

EXCLUSIVE: Get excited, Longines to work with Time+Tide on year-long access-all-areas video project called The Longines Time Machine!

Dust off your fedora Indiana, we’re going into the archives… Longines is a brand whose history the Time+Tide team has delved into before – pretty much every time they release an often best-in-show heritage reissue –  and frankly, we haven’t been able to get enough. That’s because, while Longines has one of the most impressive archives of watches in existence, as well as countless accolades for timekeeping achievements, the brand has always kept relatively quiet about it. That all changed in January with the announcement of the ‘On This Day’ campaign over at longines.com – which was around the same time we became involved. How? Well, we’ll be choosing our ‘best of’ from each month of memories and wrapping them into short videos that tell the story. In Episode 1, we set the scene at Saint-Imier in 1832…

The Macallan X Urwerk Flask Is For Whisky-Sipping Watch Collectors (Who Can Afford It)

Many of us would willingly pair a good scotch with our favorite watch. To that end, Swiss watch maker Urwerk and Scottish maker of single-malt whisky Macallan want to help you make that pairing with their new collaboration. It is not a watch, but a flask that is as complicated and overengineered as you would expect anything from Urwerk to be.

SIHH 2017: The Watches You Might Have Missed

This year the SIHH was larger than ever. While this means more great watches in one place, at one time, it also means that more watches have to share the spotlight. That is why we cleared the stage to highlight a few watches that you might have missed, but should definitely know about:

A Week On The Wrist: The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Date With Sector Dial

The annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) is, as the name would suggest, a show predominantly made up of watchmakers creating watches that represent the upper echelons of watchmaking. Six-figure price tags are a dime a dozen on the show floor. When I first saw the new Master Control Date with a sector dial at Jaeger-LeCoultre’s booth, I knew I wanted to get some time with it on my wrist, but when every conversation I had with collectors, journalists, and other industry friends kept coming back to a $5,700 time-and-date watch, I knew we had something special on our hands.

Historical Perspectives: Why Watch Movements Are Called Calibers

The word “caliber” has a number of different meanings, but in watchmaking the word is synonymous with “movement.” Across the entire industry, one of the few absolutely ubiquitous practices is to call a movement “caliber XYZ123.” It’s one of those words you can see a million times without wondering why it’s used in both the world of firearms and the world of watchmaking, which would seem to have little in common. But, have no fear; HODINKEE’s done the wondering (and researching) for you.

REVIEW – The Ateliers deMonaco Admiral Chronograph Flyback Saphir

If some of you might know this watch manufacture by now (thanks to a coverage here, at Monochrome), Ateliers deMonaco is clearly not the most famous of them all… Which, in all honesty, is rather a pity, as the brand has a lot to offer. Forget about the affiliation with the Frédérique Constant Group. Ateliers deMonaco plays in a different league (with a collection that comprises tourbillons, minute repeaters or Hallmark of Geneva watches…) and their latest creation has some appeal, both aesthetically and technically. Here is our review of the Ateliers deMonaco Admiral Chronograph Flyback Saphir.

Make Mine A Double! The Macallan Whiskey Mechanical Hip Flask By Urwerk (With Video)

Fine watch and fine whiskey, for many the two go together like single malt birds of a feather. Urwerk founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei have been known to enjoy a smooth amber tipple or two, and as discerning gentlemen with discerning taste in haute horlogerie, it’s perhaps not surprising that Baumgartner and Frei also have discerning taste when it comes to whiskey: single malt by The Macallan.
