FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 3rd February, 2017

Friday-wind-down-9.10.15Well, we’ve definitely come down from the post-SIHH high. The lights seem somehow less dazzling (probably because it’s not being refracted through thousands of diamonds) and the mood is less giddy (probably because we’re no longer consuming a magnum of Champagne a day). Whatever the reasons, reality is well and truly back, and we’re not sure we like it but maybe things will pick up after a sneaky afternoon G&T. Chin chin! What happened The FedExpress won the Australian Open, proving (in our eyes, at least) the staying power of Rolex over the flash of Nadal’s Richard Mille. And while much was made of the BLNR Federer chose to wear post-match, our eyes were drawn by the almighty bling on his wife Mirka’s wrist. Keeping on the theme, it looks like Oscar has a new crown this year, with  Rolex announcing that they are sponsoring the Academy Awards. Closer to home, Perth-based Haigh & Hastings is up for sale, which is bad news to the local industry. We reviewed their ‘Classic’ last year and found it to be a notable improvement on their earlier M2 diver. Hopefully the brand finds a new home. What really mattered The big news of the week…

Hands-On: The Audemars Piguet Extra-Thin ‘Jumbo’ Royal Oak Reference 15202 In Yellow Gold

At this year’s SIHH, Audemars Piguet released a number of impressive pieces including the Diamond Outrage, Frosted Gold Royal Oak, the black ceramic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, and some updates to the Offshore. But the watch that seemed to have the most people excited was the re-issue of the classic Royal Oak Extra-Thin “Jumbo” in yellow gold. The last time we saw this watch in gold was in rose gold back in 2012, when it was released alongside the steel ref. 15202. This year AP decided to bring back the classic solid yellow gold Jumbo with equally cool blue and yellow gold dials, all with the automatic caliber 2121 movement inside. This is modern-vintage AP at its best.

Business News: Chabi Nouri Becomes Piaget’s New CEO (And The First Female Global CEO Of Any Richemont Watch And Jewelry Brand, Ever)

The changes in leadership at the Richemont Group continue. Richemont has announced that the new global CEO for Piaget will be its international managing director of sales and marketing, Chabi Nouri, who joined the group in 1998 as product manager for Cartier. This is of course an important step for Piaget, but it’s also an historic occasion for Richemont as a whole: Nouri is the first woman to step into the global CEO position for one of the group’s watch and jewelry brands. Women in high-level management positions in the luxury watch industry remain a relative rarity, and it’s nice to see some progress (finally) being made.

Hands-On: The Bulgari Roma Finissimo With Grey Dial, An Ultra-Thin Version Of Bulgari’s Mid-1970s Design Classic

The Bulgari Roma in the incarnation you see here is a very cool watch in itself: a clear, strong, simple design with all the architectural precision you’d associate with a Bulgari Roma watch. You might recognize the general design, but what you might not know is that the first Bulgari Roma watch came out all the way back in 1975, at an extremely interesting period in the history of modern watchmaking. The original Roma is of the same design generation that gave us the Royal Oak and the Nautilus, and like those two watches, it wasn’t an instant success. Acceptance and enthusiasm took time to evolve, and the more so because the original Roma wasn’t even intended to be a commercial piece. But I think you can make a case for the Roma as the starting point of a design evolution that is in its own way just as iconic as the Royal Oak or the Nautilus, and one whose enduring presence is a sign of its enduring strength as a design.

Review – The A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite (Spoiler Alert: It is MEGA)

No need to beat around the bush… Some subjects don’t really need to be debated. The new A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite is a superlative watch, a proper masterpiece, mixing all the technical marvels of one of the best manufactures in the world (because for once, it’s outside Switzerland), with a strong respect to traditions and a devotion to what is (to me, at least) the most important in a watch; precision. Yes, you could say that the Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite blows things out of proportion but still, whatever the critics will be, we all must admit that this watch is, in every aspect, mega.
