FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 27th January 2017 – the celebration edition

Friday Wind Down 9Australia Day yesterday, Chinese New Year tomorrow – so much partying to be had. But you know what we’re celebrating here in the T+T office? Overcoming jet lag. Seriously, today is the first day this week we’ve managed to maintain concisousness at four in the afternoon. Not sure if it’s wise, but we think that’s something to drink to. Kung Hei Fat Choi Australia! What happened Insta-royalty WatchAnish unveiled this season’s must have horological lifestyle accessory – Rolex-inspired sunnies that are “a fusion between watches and watching.” Apparently. All we really want to know is: do the bezels rotate? In local news, Brisbane police have released footage of a man brazenly stealing a $15k Rolex by swapping it with a fake. The switcheroo occurred on January 27, 2016, almost a year after the same man stole a $5k TAG Heuer. We suspect the police released the video to dissuade him from knocking off a $35K Hublot this year. What really mattered Leading online watch sales site Chrono24 released some annual stats on what people searched for in 2016. In the most un-shocking revelation ever, black-dialled steel sports Rolex models are quite popular. More interestingly, they also included lists of models that were…

INTERVIEW: Cadel Evans – “I’ve really had no choice but to become a watch lover”

Cadel-Evans-TAG-Heuer-1The 2017 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race kicks off tomorrow in earnest, with men’s and women’s elite races, as well as a more laidback People’s Ride planned for the weekend, against the backdrop of some of Australia’s most stunning roads. In the lead-up to the action, we caught up with the man himself – and the only Aussie to ever win the Tour de France – Cadel Evans. Sitting down with him at TAG Heuer’s flagship boutique in Melbourne (the brand is the official timekeeping partner for the race), we chatted, naturally, about all things time-related. Time+Tide: What do you like about watches? Cadel Evans: Well, I’m always travelling, so it can be a bit hard to treat yourself at times – you can’t take a nice car or a swimming pool around the world with you. A nice watch is a different story – you strap it on and it’s always there. Plus, I’ve lived in Switzerland for the past 20 years, so I’ve really had no choice but to become a watch lover. There’s two great vintage stores near me in Lugano with some incredible pieces – I was really tempted by a German military issue Autavia the other…

Historical Perspectives: A Quick History Of The SIHH, And What Makes It So Different From Baselworld

Yesterday we published a story in which our editors looked at the watches from the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) and discussed which watches we’d personally enjoy wearing as “everyday” watches. The picks provoked some comments in which a lot of interesting points were raised – what’s an everyday watch anyway, why were the watches we picked so (relatively) expensive, and so on. After looking through them (and replying to one or two) I thought it might be useful to place the choices in a little context, which is where the watches we picked were seen. Let’s talk about the SIHH.

Hands-On: The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic, The Foundation Of The Collection’s Reinvention

For Montblanc, this year is all about the newly revamped TimeWalker collection. For a long time it’s been the best-selling family of watches for Montblanc in the United States, but at SIHH we saw the entire line get a redesign from top to bottom. The new TimeWalker is inspired by vintage auto racing, with the design codes, color schemes, and complications that go along with that theme. The consumer-friendly flagship is the TimeWalker Chronograph, and here’s a hands-on look at Montblanc’s most important release of 2017.

Panerai PAM00684 – The Small & Gold Luminor Submersible that Rocks

Panerai watches are great. They look super-cool, they have that unique aura of a robust and vintage dive watch mixed with that Italian je-ne-sais-quoi. They are icons of watchmaking. Still, there might be one issue with these watches. Most are sized for lumberjacks’ wrists. If the 45mm or 47mm diameters participate to the look (and they are actually easier to wear than what you can expect), a smaller size could be welcome. That’s what happened with the Panerai Luminor Due, the smaller, slimmer and dressier versions of the icon. But what if you want the sporty look? Well, for the SIHH 2017, the answer came in the name of the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Oro Rosso 42mm PAM00684, the small & gold Luminor Submersible that rocks.

SIHH 2017 Personal Perspectives: Baume & Mercier

After a handful of mundane years, at least in terms of mechanical men’s watch, Baume & Mercier had a good showing at SIHH 2017, keeping it compact and simple with a range of affordable additions to the Clifton collection. Though the high profile announcement before SIHH was of a pricey perpetual calendar in red gold, the key […]

SIHH 2017 Personal Perspectives: Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet prudently relied almost entirely on the Royal Oak for its SIHH 2017 line-up, which was well received despite the design being well know, proving the power of the octagonal watch. [NB: All prices are in Swiss francs, before taxes and provisional, being subject to change.] The headliner of the collection was the Royal Oak […]

If you thought the relationship between cars and watches was just an old cliché, I invite you to go take a short detour via Petrolicious, where you might recognize a few “Talking Watches” guests talking about some of their bigger and louder toys. Another familiar face, Mr. Wilhelm Schmid, was recently interviewed by the magazine’s founding editor, Ted Gushue.
