When you think power reserve, you thought that the 7-day IWC’s or the 8-day Panerai’s were already massively powerful – and obviously, they have more power than 99% of the mechanical watches produced. Well, if power is your thing and if you simply hate to wind a watch, you might have to consider the Lange 31… and 31 here is nothing about the diameter of the watch, but it is about the length of the power reserve, in days. Yes, this watch can run for 31 days, coming from one single barrel, when fully wound. Impressive, right. This powerful watch comes in a new version for the SIHH 2017, in white gold with a grey dial.
While the headlines at SIHH 2017 are more or less dominated by incredible complications and equally incredible price tags, it’s nice – almost refreshing – to find that some brands like TAG Heuer haven’t totally abandoned accessibility.
The RL67 Ralph Lauren Safari models were introduced in 2013 as a sports-elegant, and relatively affordable, line of watches that would dovetail stylistically with Lauren’s idealized view of the safari as a vehicle not for hunting, but rather for seeing new worlds and reconnecting with nature. Pre-aged steel cases with gunmetal finishes and the case design from the Automotive collection are signature elements for the Safari watches, as well as automotive style dials and, usually, canvas straps. Although smaller models were introduced in recent years (and well received, at 39mm) this year Ralph Lauren’s gone the other direction, with 50mm cases.

Bovet creates some of the most masterfully crafted and highly complicated timepieces out there. Bovet is continuing the tradition of their Récital models with the Bovet Récital 20 Astérium watch which includes a flying tourbillon with a night sky chart, perpetual calendar, and a celestial array of astronomical functions, all with a 10-day power reserve.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks you should already be aware that 2017 is the year of the Da Vinci for IWC. In layman’s terms that means that Schaffhausen-based manufacturer has completely overhauled the Da Vinci collection this year, complete with a return to the more traditional (and in my opinion, more attractive) round case. Included within this newly revamped collection is the Da Vinci Chronograph Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”, a special watch with an ulterior motive. Read on to find out what it is.
Last year at SIHH, Cartier made waves with the debut of the men’s Drive de Cartier collection that featured an all-new cushion-shaped case that has really seemed to resonate with longtime fans. This year, Cartier has added two new models with the Cartier Drive de Cartier Moon Phases watch and the Drive de Cartier Extra-Flat watch.
SIHH is as common an abbreviation to us as YMCA. It doesn’t have dance moves, it’s not the Nutbush City Limits, but it does involve the team covering some serious mileage early in the year, every year. The question is, what happens at SIHH?
