One Complicated Patek Philippe Pocket Watch from the US Antiques Roadshow in 2004

We have been hoping this valuation of a very rare vintage Patek Philippe complicated pocket watch from the US Antiques Roadshow would be re-uploaded to their website.  This is one of those finds where the timepiece has literally been sitting locked away in perfect condition.  Yes, we know the clip is from 2004 but…

SIHH 2017: IWC Introduces the Redesigned, And Round, Da Vinci

With SIHH 2017 just around the corner IWC has taken the covers off the revamped Da Vinci, which now returns to the familiar round form of the model’s best known iteration. Named after the Renaissance polymath, the IWC Da Vinci actually originated in the 1970s, starting with a blocky looking electronic watch powered by the Beta 21, […]

Pre-SIHH 2017 – IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (and a bit about the future collection to come)

It has become sort of a tradition for IWC now. Each year, when the SIHH is about to open, we all know that the Schaffhausen-based manufacture will come with an entirely revisited collection. After the 2016 Pilot’s Watches, the 2015 Portugeisers, the 2014 Aquatimers and the 2013 Ingenieurs, it’s now time to revamp the other collection, a range of watches that might not be the most popular among a large audience: the Da Vinci. An icon of the 1980s, this watch has since seen many variations, being even dressed in tonneau-shaped case. For the SIHH 2017, IWC goes back to the roots of the collection and, to open the festivities, introduces the flagship version: the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph.

TEAM PICK: Ceri David’s favourite stories of 2016

tissot-patty-mills-squareThe third in our series of Team Picks, today it’s Ceri’s turn to reveal the three stories she most enjoyed on Time+Tide this year. VIDEO: ABOUT TIME with Patty Mills of the San Antonio Spurs BY: Felix Scholz PUBLISHED: July “Basketball is a fast-paced, frenetic game, but this beautifully-shot black-and-white video shows another side to it through Patty Mills, Australian point guard for the San Antonio Spurs. I love the contrast between the dramatic music and his calm demeanour as he talks about the pressure of time, both in terms of his training and during high-stakes NBA games.” VIDEO: The only 2 min Basel explainer you’ll ever need to watch (or show to your non-watch-loving friends) BY: Andrew McUtchen PUBLISHED: March “If you’ve never been to Baselworld, the intensity, scale and pace of things are impossible to imagine. This little video is your best shot at understanding just how huge and overwhelming an event it is, courtesy of a jet-lagged and over-stimulated Andrew McUtchen.” LIST: Back to the future – 5 Westworld-ready pocket watches BY: Felix Scholz PUBLISHED: November “Not too long ago, it seemed conceivable that the mechanical watch might well fade into antiquity – just a quaint relic of a by-gone era.…

Leap Second Added To World’s Clocks For 2017, And How We Keep That From Screwing Up GPS (Badly)

There probably were not a lot of us that noticed it during the countdown to midnight last Saturday, but this year, time needed a tweak. At 23:59:59 on December 31, 2016, an additional second was added to UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) so that, for exactly one second, UTC time was 23:59:60. This might sound a little “who cares” for most of us, but managing the Leap Second is, among other things, essential for little things like running the Internet, and ensuring GPS doesn’t think you’re halfway to the moon when you’re just trying to find your mother-in-law’s house (literally).

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon: Understated Perfection

Can a watch with a tourbillon clearly visible on the dial side ever be understated? Common sense says no, but for the Traditionnelle Minute Repeater Tourbillon, Vacheron Constantin says yes! Find out why Martin Green compares this watch new to the Geneva-based brand’s arsenal of classic timepieces to a Tesla P100D with ludicrous mode.

Historical Perspectives: Did Patek Philippe Just Super Casually Confirm That Both A Two-Tone AND A Platinum 1518 Exist?

“Patek Philippe: The Authorized Biography” by Nick Foulkes is, as we said when we introduced it and as I confirmed by saying, “damn, i wish i had written it,” is without a doubt the most revealing look at Patek Philippe ever produced. But today, thanks to an Instagram post from my friend Mike Tay of the Hourglass, the book may have in fact dropped the equivalent of an atom bomb on the vintage Patek market – does a 1518 in platinum exist??
