Flowers of Evil – Skull Watches That Keep You On Time… Until It’s Your Time!

A Carcass” (a must-read; here) is without doubt Charles Baudelaire’s most infamous poem, exploring the idea that beauty can be found in even the most morbid scenes. Like Baudelaire’s “Flowers of Evil“, skull watches attempt to extract beauty from horror. These magnificent mechanical works of art emblazoned with the face of death are at once both shocking and engaging. They also serve an important purpose, an allusion to which we can find in one of the last stanzas of the poem

Introducing the Bell & Ross BR-X1 Chronograph Tourbillon Sapphire

Bell & Ross‘ top of the line wristwatch is its skeleton tourbillon chronograph, which just got fancier and a lot more expensive with the BR-X1 Chronograph Tourbillon Sapphire. The watch case is entirely sapphire crystal, comprised of nine parts: case middle, back, bezel, crystal and four bumpers for the sides, all held together by vertical and lateral […]

Despite Continued Falling Swiss Watch Exports, These Are The Top Markets

The Swiss watch industry was likely hoping for some performance rebounds at the end of 2016 in anticipation of the holiday shopping season, but alas such hopes have not been realized. Rather than proclaim “doom and gloom,” I prefer to see this as part of a larger trend of returning to normalcy.

#TBT Wittnauer 235T Chronograph – a Possible Moonwatch?

Here we are in the last week of 2016 and we’re going to kick it old-school style by looking at a classic chronograph, the Wittnauer 235T. We’ve featured a watch from the brand before with a look at the remarkably unique and bold 242T and while today’s watch might not trigger any “grail alerts”, it’s […]

TOP POSTS OF 2016: Number 2 – Greg Norman’s watch story

gallery-omega-2Editor’s Note: The internet is a weird and wonderful place, where the normal rules of logic often don’t apply. Case in point, the fact this short interview with Australian champion golfer (and de facto diplomat) Greg Norman was our second-most-read story this year. Seems there’s a lot of love out there for the Great White Shark.  How many watches do you own? Well, I’m a very lucky guy. I sound bad, but I have a lot of watches. It’s the only thing a man can really wear. A man can’t really wear earrings, or necklaces or bracelets. Well, he can if he wants I suppose, but me, I travel with six watches at all times. Only six? Only six because they tend to match what I wear. My wife does a great job because she picks out a watch to wear with each outfit. And I’m lucky because I represent Omega so there are some great options. Do you have your go-to favourites for travel? When I go away I do have my favourites, but quite honestly when I’m home, I don’t wear a watch. When I’m just around the house, I don’t wear a watch. I did a Google image…

In-Depth: The Greubel Forsey 24 Secondes Contemporain In White Gold (And The Case For A Tourbillon In A Wristwatch)

It’s been more than 10 years since I first met Stephen Forsey, one half of the horological duo known as Greubel Forsey (Robert Greubel being the other half, of course). Our first long talk – which come to think of it was also our first talk, period – was at a dinner in Manhattan, and I remember it very vividly for several reasons. For one thing, it was the first time I’d had a chance to see one of the brand’s exotic and much-talked about tourbillons in person. That’s not something one easily forgets. Probably the most memorable part of the night, however, was being able to ask Stephen a lot of questions, and to get a better idea what had inspired him and his partner to create their very beautifully made, very technically challenging multi-axis tourbillons.

The Life And Times Of Legendary Independent Watchmaker Derek Pratt

Derek Pratt (1938 – 2009) was perhaps one of the most “complete” watchmakers of our time along with his friend George Daniels. The Swiss-based Englishman firmly was behind and part of many watches and projects that are today common knowledge, while his own name remains relatively hidden.

The Five Stories Of 2016 That I Enjoyed Writing The Most

2016 was an amazing year for us, with several new products hitting our newly redesigned shop and often, to great response. The goal of all this was, and is, to fund even more original editorial content such as our amazing Road Through Britain series. That series was an important one for me because it was, frankly, the first major editorial product in which I wasn’t directly involved. It might sound silly, but that was a big moment for me and for the site.
