Fratello Watches Christmas Special – Rolex Submariner 14060M Review

Two years ago, watch collector and connoisseur Mike Stockton contributed a wonderful write-up about his Rolex Submariner 14060M. A 2000 word write-up about the classic Rolex Submariner 14060M, from the very early moment he laid his eyes on this iconic diver from Rolex, the moment he bought it (years later) up to now, years of […]

Face-Off: A. Lange Söhne Double Split vs. Patek Philippe Ref. 5370P Rattrapante

The A. Lange Söhne Double Split and Patek Philippe ref. 5370P are both likely contenders for the most gorgeous split-seconds chronographs in contemporary watchmaking. Traditionally constructed with a sprawling network of levers and wheels for the chronograph mechanism, both offer gorgeous views from the back. The basics Patek Philippe only introduced the ref. 5370P last year. Unlike many recent […]

TOP POSTS OF 2016: Number 5 – 6 reasons I didn’t sell my Panerai

battle in business class illo1Editor’s Note: Truth, as they say, is stranger than fiction. And, as it turns out, the truth also makes for a really good read, so it makes sense that Andrew’s story of sky-high sales has been one of our most popular articles this year. It’s got everything: shady characters, high drama and, at its heart, the love between and a man and his watch.   This is a true story about a man who offered me $10,000 cash for my stock-standard Panerai PAM 111 in Business Class. It even had a factory strap. We’d been talking, chit-chatting through the pre-flight champagnes, then we’d both rolled into red wine. He was picking up some kind of motorbike in California. I had business in New York. He expressed an interest in my watch. What was it? And then, not much later, entirely out the blue, he propositioned me. “I’ll give you ten grand for it.” I blinked. “Sorry?” “Cash. 10 grand for the watch, as is. In US.” He reached down and unzipped the side pocket of his bag. Sure enough. As Diddy might have said back in the day, there was a big ol’ bundle of Benjamins. As I live and breathe. I’d never really…

Recently Retired: Chanel J12 Rétrograde Mystérieuse Tourbillon Watch

I’d like to experiment with a new column where I talk about interesting specimens of high horology that perhaps should have never made it beyond the concept phase. Today, let’s look at the 2010 Chanel J12 Rétrograde Mystérieuse Tourbillon, which is also known as the Chanel J12 RMT.

TOP POSTS OF 2016: Number 6 – The Rolex Daytona video review

Rolex-Cosmograph-Daytona-ref-116500LN-15Editor’s Note: The Daytona had to make this list. It has, hands-down, been the most hyped/discussed/desired watch of 2016 – and we caught a bit of a lucky break at Baselworld, managing to post the first hands-on video review. Of course, we spent some quality time with it later in the year, but that’s a different story.  This is the one you’ve been waiting for. Steel Daytona. Cerachrom bezel. Drop the mic, cue the applause. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona – reference 116500 to its friends – is a watch that lovers of the Big Crown have been clamouring for for years. And boy, have Rolex delivered. Not only is the bezel made from beautiful, impervious Cerachrom – but the design has been tweaked so that it evokes the Daytonas of yore. And the Australian RRP? $15,700. Not bad, not bad at all.

The Magic Of Dubai Watch Week 2016

After just two editions, Dubai Watch Week has already worked its way high onto my list of horologically inclined events. The reason is simple: the organizers of this show, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, have set out to make Dubai Watch Week more of a cultural exchange on the topic of watches than a hard sales event.
