SIHH 2017: Girard-Perregaux Introduces the 1966 ww.tc

Originally introduced as a chronograph with world time some 16 years ago, the Girard-Perregaux ww.tc has been whittled down to its essentials for SIHH 2017. Short for “World Wide Time Control”, the new ww.tc is a pure travel watch, with a cities disc around the dial for the world time function that shows the time […]

HOW TO: Impress a woman with your watch

ImpressWomenWowFirstly, let’s not delude ourselves: your timepiece is going to impress more men than women. That’s a given. Unless of course it’s awful. If that’s the case, you’ll be slaying precisely no one – and also, how did you find your way to Time+Tide? However, there are a few ways you can maximise your chances of making an impression on the fairer sex with your choice of wristwear, at least a little. Listen carefully. Step 1: Choose something less obvious Less obvious than what? Less obvious than the one you’re most likely to choose, obviously. Because even though that un-aerodynamic chunk of metal on your wrist never fails to dazzle your mates and colleagues, it’s unwise to assume it’ll have a similar effect on the ladies. In the same way that we go for personality and intelligence over model-perfect looks in a life partner, we appreciate a watch that’s less in-your-face, more subtle, quietly capable. A dark horse rather than a show pony. Think along the lines of a more left-field brand, a vintage treasure or perhaps something customised. Step 2: Choose something totally obvious Don’t look at me like that. Yes, it’s confusing but get used to it, because it’s a woman’s prerogative…

Hands-On: The TAG Heuer Special Edition Tribute To Muhammad Ali, A Boxing-Inspired Watch With Surprisingly Deep Vintage Roots

While Heuer’s ties to motor racing are well known, TAG Heuer played on its less well known past connections with the sport of boxing to launch a watch celebrating the legendary Muhammed Ali. This commemoration comes just months after the boxer’s death, yet this 43mm piece demonstrates that a lot of attention was put into its development, blending vintage traits into a more modern platform. What could simply have been a good marketing coup turns out to be a nicely crafted watch, which as a bonus, comes in at a competitive $3,000 price point.

One of the wonderful things about watch collecting is that there are an incredible number of different levels on which you can go at it. Sure, we all spend a lot of time hearing about a lot of the same things, from a lot of the same auction results, to a lot of coverage of brands that because of their sheer size and industry influence are news (like Cartier, Rolex, Omega, and TAG Heuer). But at the same time, there are pockets of almost pure scholarship here and there, where collectors are motivated not by brand image or the hope of making a solid investment, but by pure enthusiasm.

In-Depth: A Game Of Tones III: The Chopard L.U.C. Full Strike, The Company’s First Minute Repeater (With Live Recording)

Chopard has unveiled its first minute repeating watch, and the manufacture hasn’t gone for the least complicated design. The Full Strike is a crown operated minute repeater (it strikes the hours, quarters and minutes) with sapphire gongs and a slew of patents on security devices to make sure the watch does not break if it is mishandled. Lucky for us, we received a demonstration from its creators during a recent visit to the Chopard manufacture (which is celebrating 20 years in 2016), and we were there just in time to shoot a video at 12:59. What were the odds.
