Profile: Jean-Pierre Hagmann, Case Maker Extraordinaire and a Legend in His Own Time

Often described as “celebrated” in auction catalogues, Jean-Pierre Hagmann is arguably the most famous maker of watch cases, or boîtier in industry parlance, of the late 20th century. Guided by his principle of “simple is better but quality is important”, Mr Hagmann is one of the few component makers in Swiss watchmaking who has become a marquee name in his own […]

The Doxa Sub300 50th Anniversary – A step back in time to the glory days of the dive watch

At Baselworld 2016, Doxa introduced its 50th Anniversary Sub300 model, a great dive watch with unquestionable pedigree. So we, at Monochrome, eagerly waited for a prototype to arrive at the HQ for a review. Once a black-dial Sharkhunter variant received, we immediately put it to its paces comparing, debating and discussing about it. That is the purpose of this article: make you understand how important and cool this watch is. However, before I proceed with my assessment, I feel that a short overview of the history of the company is needed to put things into a proper perspective.

Review: Hands-on with the Tudor Pelagos LHD

We were at the global launch event (Singapore edition) when at exactly 8pm local time, news of the new Tudor LHD Pelagos was released. We released some of the first live photographs on our instagram (@deployant) and our Facebook page. We also published a first reactions piece, based on the Press Release late in the evening. We now replace that…

GIVE AWAY – MCT Watches Leather Watch Roll (and there are 4 of them…)

As of now, you should know that we are celebrating this year our 10th anniversary. For this reason, we are organizing several give aways. After our latest contest, where you had the opportunity to win a Garrick Leather Watch Pouch, this week we have a new one for you, and not just for one of the participants, but 4 of you will have the opportunity to win a very cool MCT Watches Leather Watch Roll. MCT Watches is one of the main actors of the “indie” watchmakers, and this is why we also want your opinion about this rather special watchmaking universe.

Mercer Airfoil Watch Review

The Mercer Watch Company Airfoil is a solid-value-proposition pilot’s watch that I’ve really grown fond of from a small East Coast watch brand located in historic Central New Jersey.

FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 18th November, 2016

Wind-Down-19-2-16It’s been a week of milestones, both minor and major. A Patek Philippe became the most expensive watch ever sold at auction (again), the 2016 GPHG awards were announced (well done to all the winners) and Andrew clocked up a significant birthday. All occasions to celebrate. Prost! What happened In what feels these days like a bi-annual update, we now have a new ‘most expensive wristwatch ever sold at auction’, and yup, it’s another stainless steel Patek Philippe. The watch in question – one of only four reference 1518s ever made – sold in 13 minutes for the mind-boggling sum of $11,002,000 including buyers’ fee (that’s more than $14.5 million AUD). This figure far eclipses the 7.3 million CHF that a Patek 5016A-010 sold for at Only Watch last year. Now, we’d normally propose things that are a better buy than a single watch, but today let’s flip it. We’d rather have one steel Patek than nine RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. We’d only cause trouble with them. We’d much prefer this watch than to keep 29 asylum seekers on Manus or Nauru for a year. Seriously, anything is better than that. We’d rather have this rare and fine Patek instead of roughly four miles of…

Astronomical Design: Talking To Daniel Reintjes, CEO of Christiaan van der Klaauw

In 1974 Dutch watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw founded his own workshop making astronomical clocks, then soon similar complications for wristwatches. He retired in 2009, passing his baton along to Daniel Reintjes, who is now in charge of the world’s only watch brand completely dedicated to astronomical watches. Quill & Pad’s Martin Green sat down with Reintjes to get a feel for where the brand is now.

Just Because: A Rare Look Inside The Incredible Collection Of Mohammed Seddiqi At Dubai Watch Week

I’ve learned a lot over the last few days at Dubai Watch Week – about modern collecting habits, how independent watchmakers see the current market, and how various industry parties are working to create ever more innovative and interesting products year after year. But it turns out that Mohammed Seddiqi (the curator of Dubai Watch Week, and Chief Commercial Officer of Seddiqi Holding, the company behind Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the Middle East’s largest retailer) is an extremely savvy collector of both vintage and modern watches, and he was kind enough to offer us a small peek into his vast collection. What you’re about to see is some pretty serious horology, my friends. Pretty serious indeed.

HANDS ON: First look at the Tudor Pelagos LHD – live video, pics, price

tudor-pelagos-lhd-sliderOnce again, Tudor has surprised and tempted us with a brand new release just before Christmas – the Tudor Pelagos LHD. On the whole it’s the same Pelagos we know and love, with just a few tweaks – but these small changes combine to show the watch in a completely new light. First of all, the case. It’s the same 42mm titanium case we’re used to, with one not-so-minor difference – the crown is on the left, a feature that gives the watch its left-hand drive sobriquet. The inspiration for this unusual configuration comes from the brand’s past. In the 1970s, the Tudor Submariner was the watch of choice for French Naval divers. Some of these were delivered in a left-handed format – perhaps for divers who wore the watch on their right hand, or perhaps simply so the prominent crown wouldn’t catch or dig into the wrist. Bear in mind, of course, that just because this is intended to be worn on the right doesn’t mean you can’t wear it on your left hand – I did, and quite enjoyed the lack of interfering crown. An interesting side note is that because the crown is on the left, COSC tested the MT5612-LHD movement in different…
