Five American presidents have owned the Corum Dollar watch and, at an event at the Flying Fish restaurant on Sydney’s Jones Bay Wharf on Wednesday evening, Corum COO Davide Traxler announced that President-elect Trump will be the sixth. He told the intimate crowd that a close mutual friend had arranged an association. We didn’t know quite what to do with this revelation – the news of Trump’s victory was literally only hours old – so we kept calm and called Eric Wind, VP and Senior Specialist of Watches at Christie’s. Wind has a keen interest in presidential timepieces and in his opinion, it’s certainly possible: “I’ve seen it written that Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton all owned Corum Coin watches, but I have not found independent verification for all of them. However in 2015, Antiquorum sold watches that were reportedly the spares made of the Johnson and Nixon watches.” Given this backstory, we’ve no reason to doubt that Trump will be the sixth (or perhaps seventh) President to own a Corum Coin watch. Traxler dropped this timely piece of news while he was in Sydney to celebrate the brand’s official arrival into the Australian market through Lion Brands.…

Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda 1950 watches are the simplest of the 1950 family (a subset of the Tonda collection) and offer a number of different dial treatments for this range of simple, flat, elegant watches, which have in common the micro-rotor caliber PF701 (caliber PF701 is quite slim, at 30mm x 2.6mm, and has a platinum micro-rotor). Recently the Tonda 1950 has been offered with a meteorite dial – now in white, for the first time. At the same time as this version was announced, Parmigiani Fleurier also announced an aventurine glass-dial version, with a gem set bezel.

This was a big 48 hours for Phillips, and not just because of one lot. In total, the auction brought in 27,513,625 CHF. There was of course a HUGE result on day one of the sale – which alone represented more than 50% of the money received by the auctioneer that night and more than the total achieved by the 96 lots on the the second evening. We’ll get to that in a bit, but first, let’s look at some of the other big results of the weekend.
The Swiss watch maker Franck Muller has somewhat of a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory air to it. With an elaborate production facility named “Watchland” outside of Geneva, oftentimes over-the-top brand positioning, and watch collections with designs far from the traditional, it would not be too surprising if they were to announce that golden tickets were being hidden in the packaging. Unfortunately for fans of the brand, that isn’t the case, but the Franck Muller Vanguard Chronograph is still a noteworthy and exciting watch to consider.
