Tonight is a special night for Australian amateur astronomers, because when the sun goes down we will all see the moon like never before. What we’re talking about is a supermoon – and not just any supermoon. NASA has gone so far as to call it an ‘extra-supermoon’, as it’s 14 per cent brighter and 30 per cent bigger than a regular full moon. That’s because it’s closer to earth (a mere 356,509 km away) than it has been in 70 years, and it won’t be this big again until 2034. Tonight we’ll be treated to the astronomical phenomenon known as a “supermoon” – this is the term for the occasion in the moon’s orbit around the Earth, when a full moon, and the moon’s closest position to the Earth (its perigee, in technical terms) coincide. The supermoon phenomenon is a real thing – like any orbit, the moon’s orbit around the Earth is an ellipse, and has a nearest point to the Earth (perigee) and furthest point from the Earth (apogee). When perigee and a full moon happen at the same time, the moon can seem both bigger and brighter.

Last Wednesday, we celebrated the opening of London Jewelers’ newest location in the heart of Santiago Calatrava’s Oculus at the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. The family-owned jeweler has been around since 1926 and has five locations around Long Island, but this is the first foray into Manhattan. We were fortunate enough to count Audemars Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC, MB&F, and Panerai as co-hosts (all brands available at the store, by the way), and more than 100 guests and friends joined us for drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and wristshots. After collaborating on the design of the “Duo-Face” watch from the Rpaige Watch Co., Richard Paige challenged Duo-Face case designer Mark Carson to come up with an unexpected watch design. The result was the art deco “Crash of ’29” watch. Now Mark and Richard are back again with the same great art deco case and hands but with a Swiss movement and a new art deco dial. The result is “The Skyscraper” watch by Rpaige.
