GPHG 2016 – Ferdinand Berthoud wins the Aiguille d’Or (plus all the results by category)

Just like the media and entertainment industry, the watchmaking world also has its awards, in the name of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève or GPHG 2016 – also known as the Watchmaking World’s Academy Awards. Last year, the Grand Prix was given to Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey, with their Tourbillon 24 Secondes Inclined Vision, and a Jury Award for Watchmaking was given to Vacheron Constantin’s three master watchmakers who created what is the most complicated watch in the world, the 57260. This year, we have our own Xavier Markl attending the show and me, behind my keyboard, writing live so you can have the results as soon the ceremony finishes. And this year, the Ferdinand Berthoud Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud FB1 is awarded with the Grand Prix / “Aiguille d’Or”.

Tudor and its Heritage – The 1970s Chronographs and the Tudor Heritage Chrono

As we’ve seen in our two first episodes of “Tudor and its Heritage“, the brand did an important move into sports watches in the middle of the 1950s, starting with the Submariners, followed by the Ranger. These vintage pieces led to the creation of two current watches, the Heritage Black Bay and the Heritage Ranger, two pieces paying tribute to the rich past of Tudor Watches. However, there’s a another type of watches that we didn’t explore yet, and in this field, Tudor has been very active: chronographs. Today, we are going to look at how, starting in 1970, the brand created some highly iconic and bold chronographs, which later inspired the super-cool Tudor Heritage Chrono.

Found: A Vacheron Given To The Crew Of Apollo 14, And The Answer To A Five-Year-Old HODINKEE Mystery

Remember 2011? I sure do. I was a full-time graduate student and a full-time HODINKEE’er. I remember going to visit the Vacheron Constantin manufacture for the first time and being shown this picture – a black and white image of a watch with the Apollo 14 logo on it. At the time, even Vacheron itself didn’t know what the watch was or why it was made – but they knew it should exist somewhere. I immediately wrote the post here and send an email to Eric Wind saying “We need to find this watch!” Five years later, here it is.
