Yes, this watch is advertised as a ladies’ watch. Yes, it does celebrate 40 years of Royal Oak for ladies (as the first one was introduced in 1976 and designed by Jacqueline Dimier). But, on the other hand, this watch has everything of the iconic 1972 Jumbo and the current 41mm men’s version, just in a smaller 37mm case – which isn’t that small in reality. As far as origin stories go, the Reverso has one of the best. Back in the 1930s, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most famous model was conceived to withstand the rigours of polo, thanks to its ingenious flip-over case design. When the mallets started swinging and balls went flying, the watch could safely bury its face until the action was over, using its caseback as protection. Much later (1994 to be precise) the line evolved to include two-faced models, and the story became less about hiding away when the going got tough, and more about choosing which side was best equipped for the task in hand. In 1972, Audemars Piguet first introduced the Gerald Genta–designed Royal Oak to the market. It was iconoclastic to say the least. Since then, the Royal Oak has become one of the most instantly-recognizable watches in the world and early vintage examples are highly sought after. But what you may not know, is that in 1976 the very first ladies’ Royal Oak, designed by Jacqueline Dimier, was released. That makes this year the 40th anniversary of the ladies’ Royal Oak and Audemars Piguet has partnered up with Florentine jeweler Carolina Bucci to celebrate, releasing four new women’s watches with a new frosted gold finish.
