Founder of design agency &Larry, Singapore-based Larry Peh is the designer of Watches By SJX and also an enormous fan of A. Lange & Söhne. A key intersection of watch design and Larry’s profession is typography, or the style and arrangement of the text on watches, front and back. Larry has long admired the careful manner […]
This past Thursday we launched the NOMOS Glashütte Metro Chronometer For HODINKEE, a limited edition of just 100 watches. It took less than an hour and a half for the full run to sell out, but we wanted to make sure that buyers and non-buyers alike could see the watch in the metal – we’re really proud of it, after all – and enjoy a beer and some pretzels with fellow watch lovers. The HODINKEE team and NOMOS founder Roland Schwertner welcomed guests in New York City and a few lucky collectors were even able to take their watches home with them that evening.
Welcome to the 2016 edition of Quill & Pad’s early Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève predictions in which the team picks favorites and explains why. The contenders are: Hermès Slim d’Hermès, Seiko Presage Automatic Chronograph Enamel Dial, Tiffany & Co. East West Automatic, Tudor Heritage Black Bay Bronze, Zenith Pilot Ton-Up, and Vulcain 50s Presidents’ Watch Tradition.
This introduction is not of a new watch, but of a new book. Today, Patek Philippe announced Patek Philippe: The Authorized Biography, a new 544-page monograph about the vaunted Swiss watchmaker by British author and historian Nicholas Foulkes. The book contains over 600 images, including tons of original photography of rare watches not usually shown to the public. We’re yet to get our hands on a copy, but this sounds like a lot more than the usual brand book.
Come next Wednesday, United States will elect their 45th President. Who will head one of the greatest countries in the world? Will it be Donald Trump, or Hillary Clinton?…
Some manufactures grew to an almost mythical status and became legends, and not only among watch collectors. Their fame have simply crossed the circle of initiates to gain a worldwide aura. And as always with legends, there is a gray area. One of them is Patek Philippe. Many tried to bring light on the history of this Old Maison, we did try to bring light on some parts of the story (cf. Nautilus History) but today, you’ll have the opportunity to know everything about Patek, with an official book that can be seen as the definitive history of the legendary Swiss manufacture. Here is “Patek Philippe: The Authorized Biography” by Nicholas Foulkes – and it is available now via Patek.com.
This article will explain a series of cause-and-effect events which led to a particular situation in the world of the timepiece industry today. The modern luxury watch industry finds itself in a few extremely difficult positions from a marketing, distribution, pricing, and sales perspective – and to a large degree, they aren’t sure what to do about it yet.
Editor’s note: December is weeks away, and we all know what that means. Xmas parties. Day-drinking. Impulse watch purchases and, shortly after, almost always, buyer’s remorse. Fear not, Felix is here to help. This is my favourite ‘How to’ of his all year. I learned things. You will too. I don’t just suggest you read this, with the silly season looming, you’d be silly not to. We’re pretty sure this doesn’t need to be said, but let’s say it anyway. Don’t buy watches when you’re drunk. Nothing good can come from it. Seriously. Nothing. You’ll wake up hungover, surrounded with bottles of Dom/Chivas/Pabst (depending on budget and taste), considerably poorer and with a rare Enicar Sherpa Graph heading your way via the Philippines. But if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right. So we’ve prepared a three-step program to minimise risk and maximise fun. Step 1: Be prepared. A lot of this comes down to what you’re like when you’ve had a few. If you’re the kind of guy who gets excited about the late-night escapade to the nearest Casino for a few hands of poker (‘cos you totally could have gone pro. Totally) it might…

Creative freedom is what almost all designers yearn for. Which is why Octavio Garcia and Lukas Gopp, both previously of Audemars Piguet, have joined independent forces to create a new micro brand: Gorilla. Here is the first watch born of that union, one that is aimed at the WIS in all of us, but remains affordable.
