Drive de Cartier: Driven By Passion
Cartier actually has quite a rich history when it comes to driver’s watches, but has never been very outspoken about it. Until the new Drive de Cartier came along.

The Genequand escapement, housed inside the Senfine concept watch, was probably the single most technically interesting development in real hardcore watchmaking that we saw at either SIHH or Baselworld earlier this year. In June, we started digging a bit deeper into how Parmigiani Fleurier managed to take Pierre Genequand’s original concept and turn it into a working escapement in a wristwatch with a 70-day (and no, that’s not a typo) power reserve.
This weeks Spot the Watch is camera related and was brought to our attention by a friend of Deployant. He spotted an article in Het Financieele Dagblad, a Dutch financial paper that was on the CEO of Hasselblad Cameras, Perry Oosting and his favourite items.…
When first introduced at Baselworld 2014, the Speake-Marin Spirit Seafire was the first chronograph of the brand (introduced alongside the Spirit Wing Commander, creating a new collection of sports watches). You’ll have to admit, coming from a man like Peter Speake Marin, more used to highly complicated watches and well known for his superior watchmaking skills, this was rather surprising. A more commercial-oriented piece for sure, plus also being a sportier development of a growing brand, the Spirit Seafire Chronograph is however still (very much) a Speake-Marin watch… just with a different perspective. Let’s look in details what a Speake-Marin for a larger audience can offer.

Roberto Coin has long been known as the master of working with gold. His designs have delighted people around the world for decades. Thus, it comes as no surprise that one of his most recently revised collections, Barocco, would blend richly woven gold and diamonds for designs that are scintillating. The new line is a play on complex baroque looks of 17th century Italy, but in a thoroughly
The latest from Geneva-based DeWitt is the Academia Skeleton, which boasts a truly novel seconds hand that travels in two different directions. Powered by an in-house, hand-wound movement, the key feature of the Academia Skeleton is the seconds display at seven o’clock. The seconds hand points to the seconds on a large, fan-shaped scale running from zero […]
We have always said: there are huge analogies between the luxury car industry and the watchmaking industry whether we are talking about marketing, sponsorships, typology of collectors. In terms of products, we can also find similarities. It is extremely common for cars now to have their middle-life facelift, and this happens more and more in watches. Not entirely a new model, however slightly different from the previous version, the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Chronograph Perpetual Calendar goes through this process, with an improved movement (Calibre 1142QP) and a redesigned dial, becoming ref. 5000T.
Last year Rolex released the stealth-wealthy Everose, Cerachrom and Oysterflex Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116655, a watch that shifted the skipper’s watch from the periphery of the catalogue to front and centre. It all but stole the show. This year Rolex’s renewed interest in the line continues, with this sumptuous Rolesor version, topped off by a new chocolate dial.…
One of the surprise hits for me at Baselworld 2016 was the new Mido Ocean Star Captain V in titanium. Mido is one of the less well-known Swatch Group brands – at least in the United States – but it has some cool watches, and the brand’s flagship dive watch collection has always been the Ocean Star.
